ISLAMABAD, 4 August 2004 — Pakistan announced the arrests of two “high level” Al-Qaeda terrorists, including one with a multimillion dollar US bounty on his head, as the sweep against the terrorists widened.
In all, at least six suspects were taken into custody, among them a policeman accused of passing information to militants, a Syrian nabbed at a bus stop, and a man arrested trying to leave the country with suspicious documents, officials said.
Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat said the arrests of two men of African origin in eastern Punjab province constituted a major break, just days after intelligence agents swooped down on Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian wanted for the 1998 bombings of US embassies in East Africa.
“In addition to Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, whose bounty was $25 million, we have captured another most wanted suspect with a bounty on him running into millions of dollars,” Hayat told a press conference in the capital.
He said both men were of African origin but refused to name them.
