JEDDAH, 19 August 2004 — Makkah Municipality plans to operate special taxis in the service of the elderly and handicapped pilgrims and visitors, Al-Madinah daily reported yesterday.
The paper said the new taxis will cover the central region of Makkah and will help the old and handicapped to reach their destinations quickly.
The municipality will call tenders from national companies to offer the service at nominal rates. The taxis will be used for advertising as they pass by areas where a large number of pilgrims assemble.
Such taxi services are now available only in Britain, Germany and the United States, the paper said.
