MANAMA, 28 August 2004 — A fire in one of Bahrain’s biggest malls on Thursday night forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 people as a precautionary measure.

Visitors and workers were evacuated safely from Al-A’ali Mall in the Seef District on the outskirts of the capital Manama after a fire broke out at Al-Mastabah Restaurant on the third floor of the complex.

Thirty fire fighters arrived on the scene within minutes and began evacuation after heavy smoke clouds filled the three-story mall.

The fire was contained within 15 minutes. The mall attracts thousands of people during the weekend, including tourists. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
