The expression “fat cat” is one that we see and hear in movies and on TV. It refers to people who steal large amounts of money from public funds — from money appropriated for public works such as schools or roads or government hospitals.
I dream of the day when this group will fall into the hands of justice. When that happens, we will know that the Kingdom has entered a new phase of its existence; old ways are being abandoned and the fat cats are being named, if not shamed. The practice here has been that all such irregularities are hushed up and ignored. The fat cats grow richer and continue to live unpunished.
When I read in the newspaper of the arrest of the man who had offered a SR10 million bribe, I thought that here indeed was one of the fattest cats. Perhaps this is a first step in the battle against administrative fraud and if so, it will soon develop into a war between right and wrong.
And as in any war, all kinds of weapons will be used; the only thing of importance will be final victory. The fat cats will naturally try to destroy any groups or individuals who stand in their way. Most people were shocked when they read about the offered bribe and, surprisingly, many do not believe that what is said to have happened actually happened. Where have they been living? Do they not know the facts of life here in the Kingdom? Not believing that bribes are offered here is an indication that many people expect that all our problems can be easily solved.
