JEDDAH, 15 September 2004 — The car bombs which exploded here on Sept. 11 were the work of an amateur terrorist cell, according to a report in the Arabic language Okaz daily.
Police raided the Thahban home of Anwar Al-Najar, one of the suspects, where they found a large quantity of explosives including 50 kg of urea which were used in making the two bombs.
Police sources quoted by the newspaper reported that the cell was an amateur one with little experience. According to police, Al-Najar who was unwilling to be injured or be killed was trying to set the timing device on the Al-Bawadi bomb when he made a mistake and accidentally detonated it. Two fingers were blown off his right hand which was later amputated. Al-Najar is a known drug addict and police are questioning a number of his acquaintances.
