ISLAMABAD, 20 September 2004 — A passenger bus carrying 50 passengers in northern Pakistan plunged into a deep ravine after skidding off the road, some 28 kilometers from Kahuta, police said yesterday.
Most of the 50 passengers, including women and children, were feared dead. Army personnel and rescue workers have recovered 17 bodies. Difficulty in reaching the site hampered rescue work. The wreckage of the bus was lying some 1,000 feet in the ravine, police officials said.
The Narowal-bound bus met the accident while taking a sharp turn. Rescuers said the chances of finding survivors were grim due to rugged terrain and delay in launching the rescue efforts.
