KARACHI, 21 September 2004 — The Sindh police plan to install surveillance digital cameras at important points in the city to monitor activities of potential terrorists, a Sindh police spokesman said.
The cameras would be installed at 55 points in the city, especially at roundabouts and near traffic signals. The spokesman said that the cameras would help curb crime, acts of terrorism and other kinds of violence. He said those would be installed at places prone to violence and crime. A private security agency, SMS, would provide the police with cameras. The Sindh inspector general of police had formed a committee headed by the additional IG of Sindh Police, Asad Jehangir, to review the SMS offer and identify the locations where cameras were needed to be installed.
The deal was finalized after talks. Secret cameras are already in place at 15 places in the city, but these cameras are not digital. Police said the cameras to be installed are very sophisticated and can easily record close-up shots.
