DHAKA, 25 September 2004 — Bangladesh’s opposition leader Hasina Wajed left for Singapore yesterday for treatment of a damaged eardrum. One of her eardrums was damaged by the sound of grenade explosions at an Awami League rally here on Aug, 21.
The attack on the party rally killed at least 20 people and wounded over 200.
Hasina is likely to return within a week, said senior party leader Kazi Zafarullah.
The opposition leader was to go to the United States for treatment and meet her son and daughter in the first week of next month. But as her hearing problem worsened, doctors suggested she go for immediate treatment in Singapore.
