ISLAMABAD, 7 September 2005 — Pakistan needs the same spirit as those of September 1965 to ward off several dangers it faces today, said President Pervez Musharraf here yesterday.
Lauding the nation in his Defense Day of Pakistan message, Musharraf said that Sept. 6 has a pivotal place in the history of our country, as on this day in 1965, our Armed Forces and the entire nation had in complete unity defeated the nefarious designs of the enemy.
The Armed Forces along with the nation observed the day with simplicity and solemnity yesterday, and renewed the pledge to offer supreme sacrifice for the defense and security of the country.
The day commemorates the valorous defense of the geographical borders of the homeland in the war waged by India in 1965, and those who offered their blood and their lives in securing the sovereignty of this sacred soil. The president urged upon the nation to take a pledge to uphold the dignity of Pakistan and solidarity of the country at all cost.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in his message, told that the Defense Day was the day of paying tributes to the martyrs and our valiant defenders, who exhibited extreme valor and bravery and ensured the defense of the country.
The prime minister said that the government was channeling all available resources for making the country’s defense invincible.
The Armed Forces of Pakistan was fully capable of defending the country.
The day began with special prayers for the solidarity and integrity of the country followed by recital of the Holy Qur’an in mosques for the martyrs of 1965 War.
Newspapers published special supplements to mark the day while the television and radio aired special programs, highlighting the heroic deeds of the valiant sons of the soil.
