JEDDAH, 10 September 2005 — Police in the northeastern city of Hafr Al-Baten have seized ammunition for hunting guns that was smuggled into the Kingdom from neighboring Kuwait.
“It’s criminal smuggling, and not related to terrorism,” an Interior Ministry spokesman said yesterday.
Al-Jazirah newspaper reported that police intercepted the consignment of 190,000 rounds of ammunition after a tip-off from a Saudi woman who noticed suspicious activity at a travelers rest stop in Hafr Al-Baten. The Kuwaiti driver of the truck and his Saudi accomplice were arrested during the early hours of Thursday as they unloaded the weapons at the rest stop.
The men, in turn, revealed the names of seven other Saudi nationals allegedly involved in the smuggling operation, who were later arrested.
