LONDON, 10 September 2005 — The dollar traded lower against the euro here yesterday while the yen gained ground on predictions that the ruling LDP party would come out the winner in Sunday’s elections.

The single European currency in late trade was at 1.2435 dollars against 1.2398 late Thursday in New York. The dollar was meanwhile trading at 109.67 yen after 110.49 on Thursday.

The euro was changing hands at 1.2435 dollars against 1.2398 late on Thursday in New York, 136.38 yen (137), 0.6755 pounds (0.6753) and 1.5432 Swiss francs (1.5431).

The dollar stood at 109.67 yen (110.49) and 1.2409 Swiss francs (1.2444).

The pound was being traded at 1.8407 dollars (1.8353), 201.84 yen (202.80) and 2.2841 Swiss francs (2.2842).

Meanwhile, European stock exchanges, buoyed by a strong showing in the oil sector and a positive start to the day on Wall Street, ended the week in positive territory yesterday.

The London FTSE 100 index gained 0.35 percent to close at 5,359.3 while in Paris the CAC 40 added 0.58 percent to reach 4,491.68. The Frankfurt DAX rose 0.26 percent to end the session at 5,005.93.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 78.42 points, or 0.75 percent, at 10,674.34. The S&P was up 9.10 points, or 0.74 percent, at 1,240.84.
