KARACHI, 11 September 2005 — Heavy rains lashed the port city of Karachi yesterday leaving roads flooded and causing major power breakdown in many areas, sources said.
High alert was declared in Karachi yesterday to meet any rain contingency, as heavy downpour of the first monsoon rains hit the metropolis. However, officials said the situation was well under control. Monsoon rains and swelling Lyari River posed threat to the illegal settlements adjacent to the river. Affected people have been transferred to safe places.
Morning showers disturbed routine life of this teeming city and created problems for students and office going people. Power supply in several parts of the city was disrupted and train traffic was also disturbed, sources said.
In the fresh spell of rains throughout the country the trains departure and arrival schedule was hit with trains being delayedfrom two to six hours’, railways sources said. The late arrival of the trains has also delayed the upcountry departure of many trains from Karachi.
But nevertheless the weather turned pleasant as Karachi’s heat was cut by the showers yesterday. Met Department has forecast more rains within next 24-hours.
