HYDERABAD, 4 October 2005 — The ruling Congress party has bagged the prestigious Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in the civic elections held Sept. 24 and 30. Congress secured 29 wards out of the 59 in the corporation. Its leftist allies got 17, while the main opposition Telugu Desam Party managed to win only 10 wards. Three Independents also emerged victorious. Congress is likely to leave the post of deputy mayor to its leftist allies. With the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation also in its kitty, Congress has made a clean sweep of all the 11 municipal corporations in the state.
