Consulate in Jeddah Hosts 9th Annual Holy Qur’an Reading Competition

JEDDAH, 18 October 2005 — In observance of Ramadan, the Consulate General of the Philippines is hosting the 9th Annual Holy Qur’an Reading Competition on Oct. 27 at 10 p.m. inside the consulate grounds.

Consul General Pendosina N. Lomondot said contestants come from the Philippine Muslim tribes — Maguindanaoan, the Maranaos, the Tausogs, the Yakans, the Iranons and Kalagans — as well as the so-called “BalikIslam,” or converts.

The competition is an annual activity being organized by the consulate, in coordination with the Filipino Muslim community in Jeddah.

A board of judges will select the top five best readers based on the following criteria:

• tarweed (intonation)

• tarteel (eloquence)

• tarannum (melody)

• sawt (voice)

The Filipino community in Jeddah and the Western Region are invited to witness the special event.
