KARACHI, 25 October 2005 — US Navy ship Pearl Harbor yesterday delivered 140 tons of earthquake relief goods donated by Pakistanis living in the United Arab Emirates, the US Consulate said.
Commander Jonathan Harnden said the ship brought badly needed blankets and food for victims of the massive Oct. 8 quake which killed more than 53,000 people and left some 3.3 million homeless.
“We are here for the second time in a week to share the pain with the Pakistanis in this hour of grief and need,” Harnden told reporters at the ship.
US Consul General Mary Witt said the delivery was further evidence of Washington’s support for Pakistan, a major ally in the US-led “war on terror”, as it struggles to cope with the worst natural disaster in its history.
“The hearts and prayers of the American people continue to go out to the people of Pakistan affected by this catastrophic earthquake,” she said in a statement.
