RIYADH, 28 October 2005 — Teams of five colors competed with each other in an unusual contest organized by Comsofil in Riyadh International School (RIS).
Dubbed IT Olympics, the competition is a game of minds that needs one’s proficiency under time pressure to set up a new PC, diagnose and troubleshoot problems, run and apply programs, and utilize all the principles of what have been learned in the classrooms.
Students of the short courses on information technology offered by Comsofil participated in the competitions as one of the requirements for graduation.
“This is the second year that Comsofil is sponsoring the IT Olympics,” clarified Archie Trigo, Comsofil president. Trigo said that the event would have not been possible without the concerted efforts of the officers, instructors, volunteers and sponsors.
“Every second was gold and we were all excited in every scenario to complete the tasks assign to us,” said Edwin Cordobin whose group (the blue team) bagged the first honors.
“I will never forget this kind of adventure,” Cordobin added.
Rodel Balangue, a member of the white team that won the second honors, said: “The exciting part of the games is running after time to get more scores without physical stress while exhausting mental ability in solving problems.”
“Comsofil’s service to the OFWs is unique,” said Welfare Officer Armando Roa, who read the oath of sportsmanship and lighted the Olympic torch that signaled the start of the games.
Babes Hidalgo, community attaché of the Philippine Embassy who delivered the message of Ambassador Bahnarim A. Guinomla, observed that this type of competition in information technology was a creative and effective way of advancing the level of computer proficiency among Filipinos.
Spectators stayed late into the night to watch the “Wowowie” and “Game KNB” formats, the highlights the competition. The Game KNB was the brainchild of Ekart Gayeta, an instructor of Comsofil. Gayeta also designed the webpage of the IT Olympics which can be accessed at www.comsofil-intl.com.
