SANAA, 1 November 2005 — Twelve policemen were killed in an ambush by suspected militants in northwest Yemen, the scene of battles between the government and rebels last year that left some 400 dead, tribal sources said yesterday.
Armed men ambushed the policemen while traveling through the town of Munabbah in Saada province on Saturday, “killing them on the spot”, said a tribal elder from the region.
Three officers and a relative of the provincial governor, Yahia Al-Amri, were among the dead, added the source.
A police source confirmed the incident without giving a death toll or further details. He said the dead were buried in Sanaa’s martyrs cemetery on Sunday.
It was unclear if the assailants were supporters of Hussein Badruddin Al-Houthi who was killed by the army last September after leading a nearly three-month uprising.
