AMMAN, 24 November 2005 — The Jordanian government yesterday signed an agreement with the US oil firm, Sonoran Energy, for oil exploration in the Azraq area near the Iraqi border. Under the four-year accord, the American company has been given a concession covering 11,250 square kms for conducting seismic, geological and geophysical studies as well as drilling two deep wells and developing an oil field, according to an official statement. The agreement entitles the Jordanian government to get 40 percent of the produced oil if the quantity is less than 10,000 barrels per day while the Jordanian share rises to 65 per cent if production reaches 100,000 bpd.
