JEDDAH, 28 November 2005 — Real estate owners in the Kingdom have been asked to set up sewage systems when they develop new plots, Water and Electricity Minister Abdullah Al-Hussayen said yesterday, quoting a Cabinet decision adopted two months ago.
“The decision makes it mandatory on property owners when they develop their new lands to establish sewage systems within their plots and link them with the network,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted him as saying.
Property owners should also establish water treatment systems within the new plots, Hussayen said, adding that his ministry would operate and manage these systems.
Real estate expert Dr. Abdul Aziz Turkistani welcomed the decision and said it would help the Kingdom have state-of-the-art sewage systems all over the country within the next 10 years. “Previously, setting up sewage systems was optional. The new decision has made it mandatory,” he told Arab News. “This will help the government save a lot of money and newly developed residential areas will have good sewage facilities,” he said.
