ISLAMABAD, 28 November 2005 — President Gen. Pervez Musharraf will doff his uniform in 2007 after the general election due the same year, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid said here yesterday.
He said it was a constitutional requirement for Musharraf to remain in uniform as the chief of army staff. The minister said, “After the passage of the 17th Constitutional Amendment it was agreed by all parties, even those in the opposition, that President Musharraf will retain two portfolios — the president and the chief of army staff.”
The minister was commenting on one of the conditionality of the Commonwealth, which restored Pakistan’s membership after six years.
