HYDERABAD, 29 November 2005 — The Andhra Pradesh government has ordered an inquiry into Sunday’s incident in which 14 students of a school were drowned in a rivulet during a picnic near Vijayawada.
The tragedy occurred when a group of 436 students with 40 teachers and non-teaching staff of Ravindra Bharathi Public school at Satyanarayanapuram in Vijayawada city went on a picnic to a village near Nandigama town. Some students stepped into the waters of the Munneru rivulet, which was in spate after days of heavy rains. They were swept away by the strong current even as their school mates and teachers watched helplessly.
