MAKKAH, 4 December 2005 — More than 1,200 drivers were arrested in Makkah during a Traffic Department campaign against reckless driving, Al-Madinah reported. Jumping red lights was the most frequent violation. Each violator was fined SR900. Col. Ahmad Al-Otaibi, head of Makkah Traffic Department, said the campaign came after the accident rate in the city increased to unprecedented levels with many drivers not respecting traffic rules. Al-Otaibi said the campaign will continue and those who repeat the violation will have their cars impounded.
Student Expelled
HOFUF, 4 December 2005 — The director of education in Ahsa suspended a student for one year for bringing a loaded gun to school, Al-Watan reported. The student allegedly had plans to use the weapon in a fight he wanted to pick up after school. The student can return to a different school after one year but with the approval of the director.
