ALKHOBAR, 22 August 2006 — In cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies worldwide, Dell has voluntarily recalled approximately 4.1 million Dell-branded lithium-ion batteries with cells manufactured by Sony. In rare cases, a short circuit could cause the battery to overheat, which under certain conditions could create smoke or cause a fire.
The recalled batteries were sold with the following Dell notebook computers: Dell Latitude D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810; Inspiron 6000, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 500m, 510m, 600m, 6400, E1505, 700m, 710m, 9400, E1705; and Dell Precision M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations; and XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710. The batteries could also have been provided as a response to service calls and some were sold to consumers separately. Affected batteries were shipped between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006.
“Dell” and one of the following are printed on the batteries: “Made in Japan” or “Made in China” or “Battery Cell Made in Japan Assembled in China.” The identification number for each battery appears on a white sticker. Customers should have this number available when they contact Dell to determine if their battery is part of the recall.
The worldwide recall involves the specified batteries only, not the computers themselves. In the Middle East customers are being directed to www.dellbatteryprogram.com to determine if they have any product with batteries that are subject to this recall or any batteries that are part of the recall, and to order the replacement batteries. If affected batteries are identified, onsite instructions are to be followed to order a battery replacement. It should take about five minutes to order a replacement battery.
Dell has contacted all authorized channel partners in the Middle East regions by e-mail to:
• Inform them of the battery recall situation
• Provide a step by step detailed direction for the battery recall procedure/process
• Provide details of TAG numbers correlating with products that have been supplied to them.
Replacement batteries will be dispatched by Dell directly to partner premises in the Middle East. For additional information customers should see the local Dell website www.dell.com/me.
If the system is fitted with a recalled battery, customers may continue to use the notebook computers safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received.
