JEDDAH, 24 April 2006 — Saudi Arabia is planning to impose a new fee on expatriate women working in international schools as part of the government’s efforts to increase revenues and encourage the schools to employ Saudis.
A Shoura Council statement on Saturday said the 150-member consultative body would soon take up a proposal that calls for collecting SR1,000 for each work permit issued to expatriate female teachers and administrative staff.
The statement, which was carried by the Saudi Press Agency, said the fees — if approved — would be imposed on those female staff who are not under the school’s sponsorship.
The Shoura’s general committee also decided to discuss a draft agreement with China to avoid double taxation and prevent tax evasion, SPA said.
