BOMBAY, 25 April 2006 — The condition of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Pramod Mahajan continued to be critical yesterday even after an emergency operation was performed to improve his vital parameters.
“Further to Pramod Mahajan’s operation last evening, his condition continues to remain critical,” said Anupam Verma, spokesperson of Hinduja Hospital, where the politician was admitted Saturday after being shot at by his brother.
“He is in the intensive care unit and he is on ventilator. His kidney function is poor and he has been put on a form of dialysis,” he said.
“The condition of Mahajan is being monitored every five to ten minutes, and efforts are on to stabilize his condition as fluctations continue to hamper his health,” Verma added.
Verma also said that Mahajan was under sedation and had not regained consciousness. Excess fluid from the 56-year old politician’s kidneys was drained out and the bleeding in his liver had stopped after an emergency operation late Sunday.
Meanwhile, Stevan Dean, an Australian ortho-trauma specialist, who had arrived here late Sunday, held discussions yesterday with the team of doctors treating Mahajan.
Mohammad Rela, a liver and pancreas specialist from London, has already examined him. Rela is in the city on the request of the Mahajan family.
Pravin Mahajan, accused of shooting and grievously injuring his brother, was Sunday remanded in police custody till April 29 for further investigations. In his statement to the police after surrendering, Pravin Mahajan said he was not treated well by his “high-profile” brother. The accused said he was often humiliated by Pramod Mahajan.
