BOMBAY, 27 April 2006 — Rekha Mahajan and her daughter Poonam Rao burst into tears at Hinduja Hospital yesterday after doctors declared Pramod Mahajan’s condition very critical.

Dr. Gustad Daver, medical director at the Hinduja Hospital, said “Mahajan is still critical and we are trying our best. He is on dialysis.”

Rekha has been in the hospital since April 22 when Mahajan was shot by his younger brother Pravin.

Vinod Tawde, BJP general secretary for Maharashtra said: “The family is upset and Rekha is traumatized. We are all praying for his health.”

A medical bulletin released by the hospital yesterday afternoon described Mahajan’s condition as “critical but stable.”

Hospital spokesman Dr. Anupam Varma said the BJP leader’s condition had been the same for the last 40 hours and in medical terms can be called stable.

In another development, the case of Mahajan’s shooting has been transferred to the Crime Branch from the local police station. Police yesterday questioned Mahajan’s maid to find out what led to the shooting incident.

A diary containing the names and addresses of close relatives and friends of Pravin, the accused, was seized from his residence. Police are trying to glean more information from the diary.

The blood-stained clothes of Mahajan have been sent to a laboratory for tests.
