JEDDAH, 3 May 2006 — The casting of votes to elect representatives to the Student Council at the College of Teachers in Jeddah was held at the college auditorium yesterday without a hitch.
Two foreign students are also running in the election, as nationality is not a condition for being elected to the council.
In a talk with Arab News, Nassir Abu Sariha, chairman of the college’s election committee, said while the students of nine departments are electing 20 of the 25-member student body, the remaining five seats are to be nominated by Dean Hassan Aayel.
A few of the voting cards were invalidated either because they lacked official endorsement or they didn’t contain sufficient details.
Arab News learned that the two foreigners contesting the election are Yemenis, Hussein Sharhan and Sharaf Al-Medwahi of the college’s Computer Science Department.
Student activists Abdullah Al-Qarni, Abdul Aziz Al-Qahtani, Ahmad Al-Somali and Olwan Al-Qarni said the council should play a significant role in solving student problems involving accommodations, stipends and class schedules, which they say are constant headaches to them.
