ISLAMABAD, 12 May 2006 - The Supreme Court of Pakistan yesterday admitted the petition of Lance Naik Arshad Mahmud for regular hearing. Mahmud was convicted in the Dec. 25 murder attempt on President Gen. Pervez Musharraf.
Arshad Mahmud was convicted by a Field Court Martial under MPML (Manual of Pakistan Military Law) at Attock.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had also admitted a similar petition filed by a civilian convict Mushtaq Ahmad in the same case.
Mahmud was involved in the murder attempt on President Musharraf's life on Dec. 25, 2003.Two suicide bombers struck at Jhanda Cheechi when the president's motorcade was on its way to Army House. Fifteen people were killed.
In another development, the wife of Indian spy Sarabajit Singh, who has been awarded the death sentence by superior court for the bombing at Yaki Gate, Lahore, killing 5 people, has filed a mercy petition to President Musharraf seeking a pardon.
In his death cell, it is reported that Sarabajit Singh has embraced Islam. Official sources say the mercy petition will be processed according to normal procedures of Pakistan.
