RIYADH, 27 May 2006 — The Ministry of Social Affairs has launched an initiative to provide grants of up to SR30,000 to help orphaned Saudi children marry when they grow up.
Minister of Social Affairs Abdul Mohsen Al-Akkas announced the program, which will benefit both men and women, at a function here recently to mark the first anniversary of the opening of the social affairs department’s branch in the Riyadh region.
Riyadh Governor Prince Salman inaugurated the event at the King Fahd Cultural Center.
Al-Akkas said the grants would only be available to those registered with the ministry’s branches. The ministry was also working to offer financial grants of SR50,000 for both men and women entrepreneurs wishing to start new businesses.
Abdul Rahman Al-Nasser, general manager of the social affairs department in the Riyadh, outlined that the objective of the event was to inform the community about the rehabilitation facilities available to young people and to contribute toward preventing them from going astray and falling into the wrong hands.
“We also aim to support the young, especially those living under difficult physical and social circumstances, by rehabilitating them both psychologically and physically and by upgrading their skills which would make them productive members of society,” said Al-Nasser.
