JEDDAH, 1 June 2006 — Taif police arrested a 30-year-old foreign worker who tried raping a five-year-old girl at her home on Tuesday.

The man, a painter, befriended the girl while decorating a bedroom at her home. The attacker gained the girl’s trust by allowing her to play with his painting equipment and watch him at work.

As the girl gradually became accustomed to the man, he shut the bedroom door and tried to assault the girl. The girl’s mother, hearing her screaming, rushed into the room to find the man trying to rape her daughter.

After bringing the girl out of the bedroom, the mother locked the man inside and telephoned the police. According to press reports, police have taken the man into custody and are presently conducting an investigation.

In another incident on Tuesday, police arrested an Asian worker who tried to rape a housemaid in Al-Quwaieyah, near Riyadh.

Al-Riyadh daily reported yesterday that the woman met the worker while fleeing her employer and told him about her attempt to escape. He agreed to help her travel to Riyadh. As they traveled by car the worker told the maid that he needed to change his clothes and so took her to his apartment asking her to accompany him inside to avoid the suspicion of local people.

Once inside the apartment, the maid sensed the man’s wicked intentions. She locked herself in pretending to use the bathroom and asked the man to bring her some toiletries from a local shop.

As the Asian worker had left, the maid ran onto the street half naked. A schoolboy who was passing-by gave the maid his gown to cover herself up and then alerted the police who arrested the would-be rapist.
