JAKARTA, 2 June 2006 — The second Saudi relief plane carrying aid for the victims of the recent earthquake in Indonesia that killed more than 6,200 people arrived in Jakarta yesterday.
The plane carrying food items, tents, baby milk powder and medical supplies has been sent on the orders of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah as part of the Kingdom’s assistance to alleviate the suffering of the quake-hit people.
According to media reports, the Kingdom and the UAE have led in terms of monetary donations, but Indonesia is only about halfway to what the government estimates it needs to rebuild following the devastating earthquake.
Abdul Aziz Al-Hussein, representative of the Ministry of Finance, handed over the relief goods to the Saudi Red Crescent representative who will coordinate with the Indonesian government to distribute them among the affected people on the island.
Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, the charge de affaires at the Saudi Embassy in Jakarta, and the head of the Indonesian Red Cross were also present at the airport when the Saudi plane landed.
