SHARJAH, 8 June 2006 — Qanat Al-Qasba, an impressive cultural hub of the Middle East, will show the Algerian movie “Rachida” today at 8.30 p.m. at Al-Qasba Theater as part of its film program — Face to Face with Regional Films.
The Algerian film star Bahia Rachedi who plays the role of Rachida’s mother, has said that she is looking forward to her visit to Qanat Al-Qasba and the UAE, and to present, discuss, and provide information about the film as well as to meet the audience.
The Algerian film tackles controversies of political and social life in Algeria, and highlights terrorist and violent acts that rocked the country in the past years.
The Algerian filmmaker and the director of the movie Yamina Bachir Chouikh brings the viewer to feel the contradictions and contrasts of beautiful settings and traditions with the horrors of violence.
The 100-minute film talks about a 20-year old Algerian teacher “Rachida” who is attacked by terrorists, and left half dead in the outskirts of the Algerian capital.
Later, the young victim manages to survive the accident and restore her normal life in a new place with her divorced mother.
In a statement on the sidelines of the show, Rachedi said: “My role in ‘Rachida’ means a lot to me, because it embodies the bitter life of the Algerian people, and I am very proud of the 50 awards the movie won.” The actress who feels very excited to come to UAE, stressed that “the movie is a great achievement which deserves appreciation and gratefulness”
The actress was born in the Algerian capital of Algiers and played several roles in different social, historical and religious TV movies. Rachedi also participated in TV and Radio presentations and won many awards including the best co-star award from Tunisia for her role in “Rachida”.
Speaking on the occasion, arts & culture manager at Qanat Al-Qasba, Layla Fahim said “We decided to project the film once more after we were approached by many viewers who expressed their admiration for the film, and its cultural value, and the need for more viewers to see a modern and contemporary artistic statement of great historical value.
Qanat Al-Qasba is committed to present outstanding cinema works, produced in the Arab world as well as in Iran and soon expanding to other cultures.
The film program (Face to Face with Regional Films) organized by Qanat Al-Qasba will continue until June 29. The program includes different films ranging between long and short story from countries such as UAE, Morocco, Iran, Tunisia and Algeria.”
