TAIF, 17 November 2006 — A sixth-grade gym teacher earned his stripes as a competent editor when he approached the education director here with a handful of spelling errors and typos in one of the Education Ministry’s publications, the daily Okaz reported yesterday. Khaled Al-Jamaie identified about 30 mistakes in a sixth-grade text book. Officials say they will fix the problem, hopefully with a healthy sense of humility that a man paid to teach physical education also turned out to be a pretty good wordsmith.
Put Down That Weapon, Boy
JEDDAH, 17 November 2006 — Students of a private grade school here went running to the principal after noticing a blade in the hands of a classmate, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The principal summoned the boy and inquired about the weapon, only to discover that, in fact, the boy was carrying a harmless nail clipper that other students mistook for a weapon. It’s understandable, when you think about it: Airport baggage inspectors have been mistaking nail clippers for weapons for the past five years and counting!
