MAKKAH, 6 December 2006 — Police in the holy city received a phone call from a man who begged for authorities to come get him because he was heavily intoxicated, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. In an act that could aptly be described as drunken dialing, the man phoned in to police for help because he said he was worried he would get into a car and drive in his drunken state. Police reacted by sending a squad car to pick him up. He was then booked for drunkenness.
For Sale: Pigeons, Birds and Women?
MADINAH, 6 December 2006 — A group of shoppers became incensed over a typo on the sign of a poultry market, advertising that it was a “pigeon, bird, and women market.” According to a report in yesterday’s daily Okaz, a group of women demanded the sign be fixed to say what it really means: A women only market for the sale of pigeons and other birds. The market’s manager quickly corrected the mistake and apologized to the angry customers.
Farmer Foils Teen’s Attempt At New Car
AFLAJ, 6 December 2006 — A teenager wanted daddy to buy him a new car, so he decided to dump his old one into an old natural well shaft and report the vehicle stolen, but like any small town, Aflaj has many eyes and ears. According to a report in yesterday’s Al-Riyadh newspaper, a farmer witnessed the kid dumping his car and reported it to the police. Daddy didn’t like his son’s ruse, so he told him to retrieve his old car and fix it because he would not buy him a new one.
Runaway Bride ... And Groom
JEDDAH, 6 December 2006 — Immigration authorities raided a wedding reception during one of their routine sweeps of Jeddah neighborhoods in search of illegal overstayers and undocumented migrants. Upon seeing the police enter the wedding hall, a majority of the attendees bolted from the ceremony because they didn’t have iqamas (work/residency visas). According to the report yesterday in the daily Al-Watan, the bride and groom were among those that fled authorities.
