MAKKAH, 26 February 2007 — Ahmad Ali Ba Yazeed, the acting mayor of Makkah, said the Makkah municipality is giving high priority to projects that focus on the city’s cemeteries. He said the municipality recently finished a number of projects that include creating new cemeteries and fencing existing ones.
Ba Yazid added that the municipality has four new projects at a total cost of SR10 million to establish new cemeteries, and expand and fence existing ones. He said that preserving cemeteries is a top priority for the Makkah Municipality, which is working toward preserving the dignity of the dead.
Zuhair Saqqat, assistant general manager for studies and supervising, said these projects are being carried out at key locations such as the Al-Taneem neighborhood, Al-Jazaaier Street, Al-Otaibeya, Arafat, Al-Nuzha, Wadee Numan and Al-Mansour Street.
The first of the projects, which will take a year and a half to complete, includes the fencing and establishment of new cemeteries in different areas of Makkah, at a total cost of SR4.2 million.
Another project (SR2.39 million) to fence a number of cemeteries in Makkah will also take a year and a half to complete.
A third project (SR3 million) is to establish new cemeteries in a number of locations including the Al-Sharaaie area. The fourth project (SR1.29 million) is to establish and fence new cemeteries will take eight months to complete.
Saqqat said that the projects in some of the areas were nearly complete and the other projects will finish on time.
