JEDDAH, 17 March 2007 — A number of former cancer patients and their relatives, most of them Keralites, attended a meeting here recently and explained the difficulties they faced during the course of the disease.

The meeting was held ahead of the formation of “Cansupport,” an organization aimed at providing necessary support and guidance to patients and their families.

Dr. Abdul Shukkoor, a cancer specialist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital here, spoke about the disease. He emphasized the need for taking precautions against cancer by changing lifestyle and conducting early diagnosis. He advised patients not to start treatment for cancer before taking a second or third opinion from oncologists and specialist centers.

Families and individuals who took part in the meeting emphasized the need for a forum like Cansupport to offer necessary support required by the growing number of cancer victims. One lady, who has recovered, spoke about the great support she received from doctors, nurses and friends. “I thank God for giving me this new life,” she said. Saby George, an insurance company executive whose wife has recovered from cancer, explained how the disease changed the life of his children and himself.

Cansupport intends to organize lectures, seminars and recreational programs and explore prospects of acquiring insurance coverage for cancer patients. Those interested can contact George on his mobile 0560302277 or through e-mail: [email protected].
