JEDDAH, 21 March 2007 — Abdullah Sirajuddin, deputy mayor for municipal projects, inaugurated yesterday afternoon the first phase of the King Abdullah Street flyover at the intersection with Hail Street.
The SR39-million flyover is part of a major SR161-million project that includes a flyover and an underpass that covers King Abdullah Street from King Fahd Road to Andalus Street.
Sirajuddin said that the flyover would be completed in four months. “This project would greatly help the area, which has suffered from traffic congestions for years,” he said.
He said that the municipality has plans to establish 20 flyovers and underpasses around the city.
So far, he said, the city hall has already submitted five locations to contractors, while five other locations are in signing process. “The other 10 locations are currently under bidding,” he added.
About the Palestine Street flyover, he said that the project took more time than originally planned because of some problems with the design and the number of pillars that hold the flyover.
“We have consulted a number of local and multinational engineering consultancies and they have provided us solutions,” he said, adding that the project would take a few more weeks to complete.
The famous airplane roundabout on Prince Majed Street is being pulled down now to make way for a flyover and underpass in the area.
“The airplane would be taken to a warehouse during construction and would be installed back after the completion of the project,” he said.
