RIYADH, 10 January 2008 — Leonardo Eugenio Jr., the Filipino welfare officer who was seriously injured in a road accident in Hafr Al-Batin on Dec. 27, died yesterday, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Riyadh said.
Senior Welfare Officer Abdulgani “Jimmy” Umag, acting head of the labor office, said doctors at King Khaled Military City Hospital in Hafr Al Batin declared Eugenio dead at about 3 p.m.
It was learned that Eugenio’s mother, Josefa, and sister Raquel Shimizu have been with him at the hospital during the past few days but were unable to communicate with him as he remained comatose. The duo arrived in Riyadh on Jan. 3.
Doctors at the hospital said Eugenio suffered multiple fractures in his skull as a result of the accident. Eugenio, together with Umag and three other POLO staff were motoring to Sakaka city in the northern region of Al Jouf when the accident happened in Hafr Al-Batin, about 700 kilometers from Riyadh.
One of the rear tires of the team’s Isuzu Trooper exploded and the vehicle overturned repeatedly along the highway, Umag had said in a report.
