JEDDAH, 20 January 2008 — Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will confer the doctor of literature (honoris causa) degree on former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Azim Premji of Wipro, industrialist Ratan Tata and M.S. Swaminathan, the father of green revolution, at its annual convocation in March. President Pratibha Patil has been invited to preside over the event, a statement from the university said.
At a meeting recently, the university’s executive council also approved a proposal to hold a world summit of AMU alumni on Oct. 16. The summit will provide an opportunity for interaction with teachers and students and raise sufficient funds for creating international research fellowships, and collaborative research projects between AMU, universities and industries from around the world.
Other decisions of the executive council include opening of four admission test centers in Bhopal, Kozhikode, Kolkata and Pune for bachelor’s degrees in medicine, dental science, technology, architecture and business administration, and class XI/diploma in engineering courses from the academic session 2008-09. It also proposed to establish four study centers across the country.
A seven-member committee has been formed to look after the university’s properties and take effective measures to retrieve and protect them. Headed by Zafaryab Jeelani, the committee includes Mohammed Zubair, Waseem Ahmad, Ahtishamur Raheem Khan, Tariq Mansoor, Muzaffar A. Siddiqui and Javed Musarrat.
It has also decided to restructure the schools maintained by the university and establish a directorate of school education.
