JEDDAH, 28 January 2008 — Apprehensions about Pakistan’s nuclear arsenals falling into the hands of extremists are misplaced and have been engineered by vested interests and Americans, said Pakistani politician Fazlur Rahman at a meeting here on Saturday night. He said the expressed apprehensions were aimed at creating confusion and chaos. Fazl was in the Kingdom to perform Umrah and attend the ceremony of the washing of Kaaba. He left for Pakistan yesterday.
He said the US war on terror had failed. “We have to adopt a new policy to bring peace to the strife-torn world,” he said. “If we want peace, we have to address the root cause of the problems. We have to solve the problems people are facing and end injustice,” Fazl said.
Referring to Pakistan’s politics, Fazl said his party, a component of the Muttaheda Majlis-e-Amal grouping, believes in people’s welfare.
If the government is serious in holding free and fair elections, it should take steps to remove doubts raised by different parties about pre-poll rigging.
About the reactivation of the Rabita Trust for the repatriation of stranded Pakistanis who have been living in Bangladesh camps since the fall of Dhaka in 1971, Fazl said he was unaware of recent developments. Rabita Trust was jointly formed by the Muslim World League and late President Zia-ul-Haq in 1988.
Referring to India and Afghanistan, Fazl said, “We want to resolve issues with our neighbors.” He said the Kashmir issue should be resolved through negotiations and added that Muslims should forge unity in order to solve their problems and counter the bias against them.
