RAFHA, 1 February 2008 — A college dean here had to be rescued by the local authorities after students locked her into her office, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. The students said they were protesting delays in their financial assistance disbursements. A few windows and doors were also broken in their 1960s-style demonstration.
Principal Charged With Being Charlatan
JEDDAH, 1 February 2008 — If you are the kind of person who likes to exploit other people’s superstitious tendencies for fun and profit, it’s probably best that you don’t mix your job as a shyster with your job as a Saudi public school principal. According to yesterday’s Al-Watan newspaper, students complained that the man was trying to sell magical cures and protections to pupils. (Cures for what? Bad grades, perhaps?) Authorities investigated and found that the principal was in possession of magical items . . . or what some of us might call sheets of paper with weird drawings on them.
