JEDDAH, 8 March 2008 — A bank teller in the summer resort city of Taif told local schoolteacher Mishaal Al-Towaireki that he owed the bank SR14.2 million. According to Al-Madinah newspaper, the bank mistakenly recorded that the man owed a huge bank loan that was past due. It took weeks for Al-Towaireki to convince the bank that he was not, in fact, somebody who would or could borrow such a stately sum of money on a public school teacher’s salary. The bank eventually recognized what should have taken moments and unfroze the man’s account — but not after he had to scrape by on the generosity of friends to survive.
