JEDDAH, 15 March 2008 — Veteran journalist Arshad Husain, former commerce editor of Morning News, Dhaka, and former managing editor, Gulf Commercial, Abu Dhabi, passed away in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates, late on Thursday. He was 74.
Based in the UAE since the mid-1970s, Husain remained associated with weekly World Times, London, as member of its Middle East editorial board. After moving to Karachi from Dhaka, he briefly worked for daily Baluchistan Times, Quetta.
Arshad Hussain was also the honorary economic adviser of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry during 1969-1971. He was widely respected in the political circles of former East Pakistan and was very close to the Awami League leadership.
Arshad Husain was the father of Syed Rashid Husain, oil analyst for Arab News and the correspondent of Pakistani newspaper Dawn in Saudi Arabia.
He has left behind his wife, five sons and a daughter. His three sons, two from the United States and one from the United Kingdom, are expected to join the funeral this evening. Husain will be buried in Al-Qusais graveyard in Dubai late this evening.
Husain had been suffering from lung ailments for quite sometime.
