JEDDAH, 25 March 2008 — The General Directorate for Combating Narcotics yesterday announced the seizure of 1.5 tons of the illegal stimulant qat, which was hidden inside a giant gasoline container that was on its way to Jeddah.

Officials managed to arrest the smuggler and his accomplices after receiving a tip-off.

Anti-drug agents also managed to seize 161,000 illegal Captagon pills, 57 kilograms of hashish and 3 kilograms of heroin in the Eastern Province and Riyadh. Maj. Ibrahim Abu Helail, spokesman for the directorate, said that all narcotic busts happened in the last two weeks.

Meanwhile, Jeddah police arrested a Palestinian who was in possession of a big amount of counterfeit SR500 banknotes. The man was arrested while attempting to deposit the money in a bank in downtown Jeddah.

A police source said that the Palestinian was in possession of SR35,000 worth of counterfeit money.
