SRINAGAR, India, 4 April 2008 — Police yesterday claimed to have arrested a top militant commander and chief spokesman of Hizbul Mujahedeen. A police officer said Junaidul Islam, the spokesman of the outfit, was arrested in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. “Abdul Khaliq, also known as Junaidul Islam, has been operating as chief spokesperson of the outfit and was the most important member of Hizbul Mujahedeen,” B. Srinivas, deputy inspector general of police, told reporters. He said Junaidul Islam had a role in many of Hizb’s spectacular actions and close links with the outfit’s supreme commander Syed Salahuddin.
