PUNE, India, 5 April 2008 — Complaining of discrimination, top police officers of Maharashtra have demanded pay parity with administrative officers.
Officers of the Indian Police Service Association in Maharashtra held a meeting last week to discuss the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission and expressed anguish over the “raw deal” meted out to them. In a resolution passed at the meeting, the officers said the rank of deputy inspector general should be abolished as there is no corresponding rank in any other federal service. If that were not possible, the pay scale of the DIG-rank officers should be brought on par with the next level in the Indian Administrative Service.
The resolution said that while directors general of the central paramilitary forces were given higher scale on par with secretaries to government of India, it was felt that commission sought to deliberately pull down the stature of directors general of police of states who command a very big force and play a vital role in maintaining law and order.
