ABU DHABI, 15 April 2008 — The Abu Dhabi Municipality has decided to implement new paid parking to address parking woes and prevent misuse of these spaces in the capital, state news agency WAM reported.
Jumaa Mubarak Al-Juneibi, director general of Abu Dhabi Municipality, said that they have created the paid parking meters after conducting studies to the parking needs of particular areas.
The municipality has classified parking spots into two kinds. It will cost AED2 or AED1 per hour depending on the category of the parking spot. Users can pay parking fee through mobile phones, coins or cards.
According to sources, over 2,500 parking meters will be installed in the city as part of the new so-called Parking Management Program (PMP). For this purpose, the civic body has divided the city into 43 sectors.
The first phase of the project will cover four sectors around Hamdan Street (Fifth Street) and Khalifa Street (Third Street). The area around Al-Gaith Tower, the Next store and Al-Noor Hospital will be where the parking toll begins.
