MADINAH, 21 April 2008 — A Saudi man who was pulled over for running a red light knew he was going to have to spend 24 hours in a detention center at the traffic department’s lockup. The man, who was a diabetic, did not like the prospect of being locked up with dozens of other traffic violators in the over-crowded cell so he came up with a plan to use his disease to get out of prison. He called his cousin and asked him to bring a few bottles of high sugar fruit juice. He drank the juice and pretended to pass out. Traffic police immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors told the man that his sugar level was dangerously high. The traffic police, fully aware that the man purposely drank the juice to increase his blood sugar, decided not to detain him any longer and let him go after he paid a SR300 traffic fine.
