JEDDAH, 25 April 2008 — More than 4,000 kidney patients in the Kingdom are waiting for transplants, according to a report released by the National Center for Kidney Transplants.
“As many as 1,500 patients in the Kingdom have so far undergone transplants,” the report said.
The center emphasized the need for taking precautionary measures to prevent kidney failure and urged the public to be aware of lifestyle habits that cause kidney problems.
Apart from hereditary reasons, kidney failure could be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation and urinary tract infections.
Prince Fahd bin Salman Charitable Society for the Care of Kidney Patients plays a significant role in taking care of poor kidney patients across the country.
The National Commercial Bank (NCB) recently donated 65 dialysis machines at a total cost of more than SR5 million as part of its social responsibility program. The machines are being used in 32 government hospitals in 26 cities.
According to latest estimates, there are now more than 90,000 kidney patients in the country.
