JEDDAH, 24 May 2008 — Renowned Saudi artist Safeya Binzagr will hold a month-long exhibition titled “The Traditional Costume Collection” at Binzagr Gallery (close to Madani Travel) on Waly Al-Ahd Street from tomorrow, the organizers said.
The exhibition consists of two main sections: the first showcasing 55 paintings of men and women in traditional Arab attire and the second displaying traditional clothes.
Safeya Said Binzagr was born in Jeddah and grew up in the Harat Al-Sham Quarters of old Jeddah. There she experienced all of the traditions, heritage and joyful customs practiced in the daily life of its people. She began her education in Cairo and then went to Britain to study English. Back in Jeddah in 1964, Safeya witnessed the rapid changes impacting all aspects of life, particularly the changes in the clothes, customs and habits of Saudis. Modernization was rapidly replacing the old with the new. She began her artistic journey inspired by social history, traditions and folklore.
Safeya has exhibited her works in Riyadh, Dhahran, Yanbu, Jubail, Madinah and Abha, as well abroad in London, Paris and Geneva.
